By baking I mean I prepared the mix and put it in the 18th century contraption that resides in the Gran's kitchen that is shaped like a sarcophagus and is about as suitable for cooking. After locating the faded parchment with the instructions on the Ignition process, I managed not to set the place alight, but what came out 35 minutes later was something resembling the crater in front of the Islamabad Marriot.
Never mind, it will still be edible when covered with coconut-pecan icing, also brought over by the Mom. Unlike the cake she bought specially for my 4th birthday (the last I celebrated in Banbury) at which, I'm told, I stuck up my nose and ate not one bit.
Perhaps my 160th birthday cake will turn out better.

Just get rid of 'em
Making pennies has become a costly proposition for the U.S. Treasury. Prices of zinc and copper have spiraled in recent years, and it now costs 1.4 cents to make the 1-cent coin. So far this year, 3.6 billion pennies have been minted -- $36 million worth of change costing $50.4 million to produce. The metal in a UK 1p coin is worth about 1.5p.
"Is it an extra special birthday?"
I asked her what she meant.
"It seems as if everyone's making a fuss over it and I wondered if it were an extra special one."
I shrugged and said I didn't know what that meant, that I was turning 40 this year.
"Oh, no, that's not special. 50 is special....
And 70....
And 90 I guess...."
(Long pause)
"I just thought maybe yours was special."

Who would you expect to announce that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin won't cooperate with the Alaska Legislature's probe into whether she abused the power of her office in Trooper-Gate?Not Palin herself. Nor the spokesperson for the Governor's Office. Nor the lawyer the state is paying to represent her in her official capacity in the case. Instead, that announcement was made today by a spokesperson for John McCain's presidential campaign.
Just keep that in mind as this case unfolds.
I *so* timed it wrong today though. I left the house at 8:20 and hit a traffic jam on the M40 at 8:55 and sat in traffic ...
...for two and a half hours.
There was a pretty serious accident about a mile ahead involving a tanker and two cars and they took forever to get one lane of the motorway open. I left my mobile at work the night before, so I couldn't call anyone to let them know but honestly I wasn't too upset as who is ever in a rush to get to work? Luckily (after an hour) I remembered I had some old magazines in the boot and a six pack of diet coke that I'd bought from Tesco over the weekend.
I'll have to stop for petrol on the way home tonight.

On Monday, I took annual leave and picked up the van I'd reserved from 1Car1 car hire (£49, around $90) in Oxford around 9:30am. I left my car in the nearby park & ride lot which I thought would be safe enough. After driving back to Frieth I took about two and a half hours to load the van. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get it all in one trip, but it fit ... but only after careful arranging (and unpacking and repacking). The weather wasn't too hot and only lightly rained for about five minutes so that was bonus.
Once I was on the road I tried to reach CM who had offered to meet me in Banbury to run interference on the Gran. Unfortunately that didn't work out and instead I got to Banbury about 3:30 and parked the van about 20 feet down the road from the house. Gran was very inquisitive but after having a good look around I banished her to the sitting room and got on with the unloading. That took about five hours all told, with a short break to the corner market for something to drink. 70 or more trips up two flights of stairs just about did me in, and by the end of the evening I was just shoving things into the ground floor front room. Gran kept trying to offer me tea or something to eat but I had none of it. It was cool and breezy but thankfully not showery. In the end I locked up, had a quick shower and collapsed into bed.
Tuesday morning I was up early to return the van after filling it up with diesel (£22, around $38). No mishaps and my car was fine and I was only slightly late to work.
Since then, I've spent the first hour after work each evening downstairs being debriefed by the Gran, and trying to make a meal for myself while utilising the fewest dishes. Since I've no internet access or TV on the top floor, I had several early nights (before 9) with a good book instead.
The commute to and from Oxford has been a bit wild. Schools started up again last week which means more traffic on the roads, and we've had a week of wet windy weather (including gales and flooding for the past 3 or 4). There are several backroads I can take and I'm still exploring but on average the commute is about 55-65 minutes. Once it took an hour and twenty minutes.
I still have a few odds and ends in Frieth, and will be paying half rent and bills there until Nov 22 when the lease is up. I've asked Royal Mail to forward my post though (and they've accepted £25 as a fee to do so).

It's a good thing I only have two payments I have to make in US Dollars each month, and one of those will be paid off in January. The price of buying dollars has gone up 10% this past month.
Gloomy comments over the weekend from UK Chancellor Alistair Darling, who warned that Britain was facing its toughest economic challenge for 60 years, triggered sterling's plunge on Monday, which were exacerbated when the OECD predicted that the UK would be the only major industrial country to plunge into recession this year.
