Le Fin
All change, please. This is the end of the line. I've been posting to Blogger for 50 months, chronicling the Trials and Tribulations on Terradyme, but I'm through now. It's served its purpose. Water under the bridge, and all that. Unlike past posting holidays, this one will be significant. But... I'll be revamping the web site and Terradyme 2.0 will be out shortly, new and improved, sugar-free and 100% guaranteed.

Penultimate
To bring everyone up to date: Lunch last Saturday chez moi went very well. I didn't bother getting ready Friday night and instead woke up at 10 Saturday to clean and to prep the food. As it was, CM showed up early so we had a nice chat while I cooked. CG showed up a little bit later with a nice bunch of tulips and more chat ensued. The soup and wraps seemed to go over OK, and everyone chose Hot Fudge Chocoloate Sponge Cake for dessert over fresh fruit. After, we drove out to Yarnton to the garden centre and antiques shop where I found something perfect I'd been after for quite some time. Sunday: Day of Rest. Monday: After work I took the bus down to London. I had free tickets to a concert at the BBC Studios in Maida Vale which was being broadcast on Radio 3. It was a programme of Mozart's sacred works including the Mass in C Minor and Ave Verum Corpus. Unfortunately SK wasn't able to come along as planned by I enjoyed the night out on my own and as I already had a bus pass and took a sack dinner the entire outing was free. Last night I went to the Annual General Meeting of the gay social group I belong to (and for which I am the webmaster). I wound up being nominated/volunteering to join the Committee which has monthly meetings in the Town Hall. After everyone adjourned to the Jolly Farmer pub for a pint or seven. I hadn't been feeling well during the day and the weather was foul and I almost didn't go, but I'm glad I did in the end. Tomorrow I'll be making the journey to Banbury.

I have a headache
Amazingly, after I got home from work I rang my GP and was able to make an appointment for tomorrow morning! I have a growth under my arm which has become suddenly larger, discoloured and painful, and I would like him to take a look at it. It's probably nothing.

Sticks and Stones
I mean, have you looked at www.godhatesfags.com? Go on, have a look: it's fun-filled family fare. Not. And did you know that the guy responsible for that site, "Reverend" Phelps, sends out members of his church to protest at funerals of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq (including this recent protest in Midwest City, OK)?
[Church] members deliver a message that U.S. military deaths are divine retribution against a nation that it claims harbors homosexuals in direct violation of God's will.
Maybe someone should tell Phelps about Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Happy go bye bye
I wasn't very disappointed about Brokeback Mountain not having won the best picture Oscar. I didn't see any of the other four nominated films, and as I may have said here earlier, I didn't quite know what to make of BM after having seen it. I'm not sure I would have nominated it for Movie of the Year. But then I got into work and, walking into an office and upon a conversation between two of my colleagues, I heard the following: "I mean, who would have wanted a gay cowboy film to win, anyway?" "Im sure it was good, but...." and now I'm just pissed, and now I'm going to explain a fundamental fact about me that, as far as I can tell, everyone who reads this blog just doesn't get. I didn't respond to those comments because, as a gay man, for fifteen years I cultivated a conditioned response: to hide, to deny, and to conform. It has unfortunately become "first nature." I am a member of the last, largest minority subjected to blatant discrimination, sanctioned by government, church and society. Discrimination is one of the biggest reasons I moved to the UK, which contrasts with the US in these areas, among others:
  • In 34 states, Gay, lesbian, and bisexual employees can be fired just for being gay.
  • Current U.S. immigration law does not allow gay citizens or permanent residents to petition for their same-sex partners to immigrate.
  • Same-sex couples are denied over 1,000 benefits, rights, and protections that federal law affords to married, heterosexual couples, as well as hundreds of such protections at the state level.
  • Under the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue, don't harass" policy, gay, lesbian and bisexual service members are prohibited from serving openly.
  • Only 23 states and the District of Columbia have at least one county where Gays and Lesbians can adopt
  • On July 1, 2004 the Virginia Marriage Affirmation Act became law. In addition to prohibiting the recognition of same-sex marriages and civil unions, this legislation prevents same sex couples --who can not legally marry in Virginiafrom entering legal contracts that might have given them rights granted to married couples e.g. medical directives, joint custody agreements, and mutual wills.
I listed many of these in the blog during Gay Pride month last year. The point I'm trying to make now is that even though there are pockets and individuals here in the UK who are prejudiced, English society and government is Years ahead of the US in these matters, and the US is moving backwards by leaps and bounds, I believe. On a more personal level, other than hearing comments similar to those at the top, I myself have to my knowledge never been a victim of discrimination or homophobia. That may be, however, because I have "played it straight." There are only 2 or 3 neighbourhoods in all of the US that I might have felt comfortable walking down a street holding hands with my partner without fear of smirks, comments, or worse: attacks. And though I don't talk about being gay 24 and 7, it is a huge part of who I am. And though I'm not currently in a relationship, I think about it daily; I'm forced to, because I see all the "normal" heterosexual couples everywhere I look. No one ever asks me what I think about any of these issues. No one asks me what I think about the fight against AIDS. No one has asked me whether I agree with People Magazine's naming Matthew McConaughy "Sexiest Man Alive." Maybe the fact that not many people who are close to me ask me about or talk about this says more about them than it does about me....

Frenzy
Just a reminder, today's the last day of the happy template! Get your fill of it while you can! I'm rushing around, despite being too tired to think straight, as I'm trying to get the house in order for visitors. I'm having CG and CM over for lunch tomorrow. Nothing special: soup and fajita wraps and a pudding for after. I waited until the very last minute and with SK's help tonight after work I bought whatever fell into my basket at Marks & Spencers. Of course the last time I had them over for a meal, I stressed so much that I wound up making an appointment with my GP & was put on a daily regimen of happy pills....

It could be worse
I heard today that it's sunny and 80 degrees F in Oklahoma. It snowed in Oxford today. I don't remember the last time the temp was in the 40s. The Met is warning that parts of the north are due to have temps around 15 below C, and the Royal Auto Club are warning motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Wednesday night Snow showers continuing to affect N.Scotland, N.Ireland, Wales, northwest England and into the Midlands. Mainly dry and clear elsewhere with a widespread frost. Thursday A cold day but with lighter winds. Most areas will have sunny spells but further snow showers are likely, especially for northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Midlands. Friday After another widespread frost it will be cold again with most areas having sunny spells and only scattered snow showers in the north. There is the risk of some snow for a time in the south. Saturday Staying cold with further snow showers, particularly for the north and west of the UK. Sunny spells for most places, but sharp overnight frosts.
But I'm happy for the Oklahomans!

I saved a gazillion dollars!
I received notification that this month's transfer of money from the UK to the US was successful and --this is the best part-- using the new 3rd-party company I signed up with, the whole transction was FREE! Those banks with their transaction fees and acceptance fees and foreign currency exchange fees and "it's Tuesday" fees can kiss my! Saving money makes me happy!
