Green with envy
I can't begin to describe what a great time I had in Dungarven. It was just the short break I needed to recharge, and I was so happy to have the chance to spend time with Nicky and her family. No problem with the flights either way, and though it was a bit cold, there wasn't much of the wet stuff in the sky. It didn't matter, as we were indoors most evenings. ;-) Dungarven is a charming, picturesque seaside town. Everyone I was introduced to was welcoming and friendly. It's evident why Nicky wanted to leave DC & resettle there. It was my first trip back in almost 30 years, and the first since acquiring my citizenship. I most definitely won't wait another 30 years to go again.

Sneachta
Despite 24 hours of the worst winter weather we've seen this year, I'm still due to leave tomorrow a.m. for a long weekend in Ireland, visiting my SD and her family. Irregularly scheduled programming will recommence upon my return.

Earth to Major Tim
You may find it hard to believe, as I am definitely a child of the 80s, but I have never felt comfortable with the whole Instant Messaging thing. I was an early subscriber to AOL but perhaps because most of my acquaintances at the time were a local phone call away, I used that medium instead. I understand there are businesses now that use IMing as a way to communicate, but where I work Phone is still King. Having said that, I have been trying to utilize my new web cam. I reported earlier that I was able to chat with P (by voice) through the computer a few weeks ago. This weekend my brother was able to (after an hour of failed USB hardware recognition, mis-installation of Webcam drivers from the CD and the net, required installation of Direct 9 video software from Microsoft over the web, and validation of Windows OS Authentic Serial Numbers--perhaps he should buy a mac next time hmm hmm) participate in a video chat with me. When I stop and think about it, it's very cool that we are able to talk and see each other, 3000 miles away, in real time, for free. The contrast with the experiences of the Roanoke colonists (about which I'm currently reading) who left England and four months later arrived in the New World is striking.

Ban a Nan
Yum, I just finished a delicious banana sandwich I made myself; good English butter, thin sliced white bread which I love (but which mom says is just cardboard) and fresh, but not too ripe, bananas. But what I really wanted to write about today was Santa Claus. I'd like to think, if I'd ever had the chance or desire to have children, that I would not have introduced the idea of farcical, make-believe characters such as Father Christmas, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. Why lie to them? They're not just little white lies, either: they go on for years and years and each has a whole mythology built around it. Is there some sick pleasure adults get out of duping someone who's barely learned to tie his shoes? I remember the day I found out the Tooth Fairy wasn't real. I was six. Other than birthdays and allowances (if you earned one, which I didn't), this was the only opportunity for kids to acquire cash, and all the boys in the neighbourhood would compare and boast, even at that young age. I was so excited when I lost my tooth (I think it had been loose for some time, and I had been anxiously wiggling and prodding it for days; I couldn't wait for it to fall out.) That night I carefully placed it under my pillow, and could barely contain my excitement. I had to check on it several times before falling into a fitful sleep. In the morning, of course, the tooth was gone, and a coin was left in its place. It was probably the usual amount, but for some reason I thought it was a bit on the low side, and scrounged around in my room for some more small change I had secreted. Proud as a peacock, I marched up to my mom. "Look," said I, "the Tooth Fairy left me 65 cents." "That's funny," said mom. "I thought she only left you a quarter." A little over a year later (I was seven), as we were spending Christmas in Chicago on our way to Turkey, I kept wondering how Santa could be in so many different places at once (I'd seen him on different street corners on the same block, in multiple department stores, at the parade, etc.), especially when he had so much to do before the big day. I asked my parents, and they sat me down with the "Yes Virginia" article in the newspaper. I was pretty disappointed. How could I have been so gullible? What was worse, my parents, the two most important people in the world, had lied to me for MY ENTIRE LIFE. Why was that OK? What kind of lesson was I supposed to learn from that? What was worse, they wanted me to join them in their evil plot, and to perpetuate the lie so as not to ruin it for my little brother. I was crushed. Of course, now I'm taking medication, which has helped. And I've forgiven the 'rents.

A nice Valentine's Day story
Stolen from Jonathan, and from yesterday's Telegraph:
A German zoo has imported four female penguins from Sweden in an effort to tempt its gay penguins to go straight. Penguins at the Bremerhaven Zoo
The four Swedish females were dispatched to the Bremerhaven Zoo in Bremen after it was found that three of the zoo's five penguin pairs were homosexual. Keepers at the zoo ordered DNA tests to be carried out on the penguins after they had been mating for years without producing any chicks. It was only then they realised that six of the birds were living in homosexual partnerships. Director Heike Kueck said that the zoo hoped to see some baby penguins in the coming months. She said that the birds had been mating for years and one couple even adopted a stone that they protected like an egg. Kueck said that the project has the support of the European Endangered Species Programme because the penguins, which are native to South America, are an endangered species. A biologist will be on hand to monitor the experiment. But introducing the Bremerhaven penguins to their new Swedish friends may not be as successful as hoped after earlier experiments revealed great difficulties in separating homosexual couples. In case they show no interest, the zoo has also flown in two new male penguins "so that the ladies don't miss out altogether," Kueck added.

Enough with the self-absorbed characters
Just back from seeing Sideways at the Phoenix in Jericho.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Maybe I shouldn't have seen Closer first (or so recently). Or maybe I shouldn't have read after that it was directed by Alexander Payne, the same guy who directed Election, which was quirky but great. Or maybe it just hit too close to home. I'm trying to decide whether either or both of these movies are trying to say that it's OK to lie and cheat, because you get what's coming to you in the end. UPDATE: I've just found out that this is one of the Five movies nominated as BEST PICTURE at this year's Academy Awards. No way. No way in hell.

Give it up
Oddly, this week's news headlines have been dominated by stories discussing whether it's time for the old folks to give up, to make way for the young(er) 'uns, and to retire "gracefully." The Pope seems to have recovered well from his temporary coughing fit, so the Cardinals should douse that brazier; looks like he's here for a while longer yet. Unfortunately there's nothing in Church law to deal with an incapacitated Pope or one who has "resigned." There's no question about the Queen, though who looks like she could be on the throne another fifty years. The question came up this week after her son announced his upcoming wedding to Camilla, who will become Duchess of Cornwall when they wed, and Princess Consort if (ever) he becomes King. At the announcement, the country yawned. Fully 40%, apparently, could care less. The Queen, in remarkably good health at 79, could have another good 20 years in her yet (her mother lived past 100), making the point moot in the end. I'm keeping an eye on the post for my invite to Windsor on April 8, though.

Mind the Gap
We've made a few changes around here. Most of the construction is done but there'll be a few more minor modifications over the coming week. Behind the scenes, I've switched web hosting plans with my provider, which means Terradyme has been down for some time. I've been unable to get to Email either, so excuse me if I haven't responded recently. Comments? Questions? Anyone? Buehler?

I'd like a bit more personal space, please
CG and I had planned to see Closer Wednesday after work, but I hadn't realized that a) only Orange mobile phone customers are entitled to the 2-for-1 tickets, and b) Wednesday's showing was close captioned. We postponed it until today. I thought it was a pretty good film; the only thing I knew about it before seeing it was the Oscar nominations it has received. Natalie Portman was superb (all four were great) but throughout the film I kept on thinking "that's Julia Roberts." I didn't see her in character. The other comment I want to make is that as I was more than a little embarrassed to see it with Cynthia, even though it was Certified 15, as there were definitely "sequences of graphic sexual dialogue, nudity/sexuality and language." There's been quite a bit of commentary on the boards on the different ratings it's received in different countries:
Certification: Australia:MA / Brazil:14 / Finland:K-15 / Germany:12 / Hong Kong:IIB / Ireland:18 / Netherlands:12 / Norway:15 / Portugal:M/16 / Singapore:M18 / Switzerland:16 / UK:15 / USA:R

Charmed, I'm sure
Out of curiosity, I followed a link from CNN's home page today, which read Marine: It's 'fun to shoot people.' Imagine my surprise, then, when the quote wasn't attributed to a Private or Lance Corporal serving in Iraq, but to a three star Marine general:
Lt. Gen. James Mattis, who commanded Marine expeditions in Afghanistan and Iraq, made the comments Tuesday during a panel discussion in San Diego, California. "Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot," Mattis said, prompting laughter from some military members in the audience. "It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you. I like brawling. "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis said. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."
On an aside, I noticed the Marines missed their recruiting targets last month.

Perdu. Not the one in Indiana, mind you.
I've lost my winter hat, and my gloves. Not together, though. I mean the gloves are probably together but they're not with my hat. At least, they weren't together with the hat when they disappeared. They may have met up somewhere since. I miss them.
