ebay ebay ebay
I think I mentioned that I bought a computer program last spring to help me with all the auctions I posted to eBay right before I moved. Unfortunately it's a US-centric application, and I have a few items I've wanted to post, so this afternoon I sat down and did it the "hard" way. There are a few differences in the ebay.co.uk site, and they've had some upgrades since last May when I last posted, but overall it was an easy experience. I still think it's the best way possible to get rid of your "junk."

Don't tip the barman
I don't think I've got this "going out for a drink" thing down pat yet. A couple weeks after I got back from the States, I went down to my local for a pint. I wasn't meeting anyone there but thought I would stop in and try to be social -- at least it would get me out of the house. I actually like the pub by my house: it has a bit of character & a mock-Tudor exterior, and the inside isn't just all video poker machines and sterile laminated menus and Zimas. But after ordering a pint, all I could do was stand there and drink it; every table was occupied by people who obviously were there together, and the bartender on this particular night was a foreigner who didn't speak English very well (and my Slovakian is rusty). I don't smoke, which is what most guys who were sitting or standing at the bar were doing, so I don't have anything to occupy my hands or my attention in between taking drinks. I felt like a goober picking up my glass, taking a swallow, setting it down and standing there for 30 seconds before taking another drink, trying to avoid looking in any one particular direction (staring) for too long. I guess you really have to have someone to go with, or at least have plans to meet up with someone you know.

Snip snip
I'm still in the process of sorting out my free flight to the USA in April, but in the meantime I've signed up to the Daily Express' offer of a free round trip ticket and two nights' hotel stay in one of 16 European cities. I only have to collect 35 coupons printed in the paper. Should I choose Prague? Budapest? Dusseldorf?

Not Necessarily the Sun
Knowing my Uncle will be visiting for an extended stay in a few weeks, I decided to try something different on Sunday and booked the MegaBus into London. It's a relatively new service--a doubledecker that runs every two or three hours from Oxford to London (and back). You have to book online beforehand and it's no frills, but cheap; my return fare was 4.50, about $9.00. It leaves Oxford from the ice skating rink by my house, so it couldn't be more convenient, and only takes about 90 minutes into Baker Street. I was up at 6:30 to get the 7:30 bus. I was one of only two riders to start, so I had the front seat on top & was able to greet the dawn. I wanted to get down there early enough to make one of the famous walking tours; this particularly morning I took the tube up to Hampstead for the first walk of the day:
Old Hampstead Village Our setting is London's most picturesque neighbourhood...a perfectly preserved Georgian village crowning the top of a handsome hill and garnished with the capital's most elegant old world promenade, a medley of cobble-stone lanes, pretty cottages, surprising turnings, and unsurpassed views. As for our cast of characters...well it's every bit as beguiling as our setting, ranging from the highwayman Dick Turpin to the painter Constable to the poet Keats; from Freud and D.H. Lawrence to Sting and Boy George; from Elizabeth Taylor and Emma Thompson to Rex Harrison, Peter O'Toole and Jeremy Irons. And for good measure, there's London's most villagey atmosphere and magnificent Hampstead Heath, the capital's best-loved park.
The guide was an older gentleman, Charles, who we later found out used to be a television producer (The Goons) for the BBC. A native of the area, he was full of humorous anecdotes. Unlike the last walk I went on, the weather was bright and sunny and cool but not cold, so the 35 of us thoroughly enjoyed strolling on the Heath. After the walk, I grabbed some lunch and then took the tube down to the river. I had been meaning to visit the Tate Modern for some time (but could never drum up interest from anyone with whom I was traveling) so now was the perfect opportunity. I was unfortunately disappointed. Other than the Turbine Room, I was not impressed and in fact I was a bit put off by the crowds and the museum's illogical layout. I only spent about 30 minutes there. I walked across the river past St. Paul's and got lost in Barbican land. I should know better; I've been caught in the maze of 1960s-style blocks of flats, concrete walkways and immobile barriers before. I don't think anyone lives here; there certainly aren't any pubs, restaurants or shops, at least that I could see. The signage is 3rd rate as well. Grumble. I had dinner at a cafe and then took the 6:30 MegaBus back to Oxford. I was well and truly tired out by then, but I'm glad I went; there's no reason to take advantage of the service more often. I just wish someone had done my laundry for me while I was away.

Whathe?
Can you figure out this picture? Hint: It's right side up, and I took it during my day out in London yesterday. Not Necessarily The Sun

It's January. Only.
I took the MegaBus down to London for the day yesterday -- more on that later. But, to note: I've got daffodils coming up on both sides of my front door, already!

Bring Bring
I've had it. I've got to get another phone--one for the bedroom--and a DSL filter for the line. Someone called at 12:35 this morning, just as I was floating off to sleep; I was extremely disorientated, and threw myself down the flight of stairs and raced to the east wing in an attempt to get the phone before voice mail picked up. No such luck, and no message either. Thanks. Guess what time I was able to get back to sleep?

Not animal, not mineral
I had one of those "oh, yeah" moments yesterday. Among the many items I bought at Tesco's with my mom when I moved into the house in September, I bought a vase. Unlike my Gran, I actually like getting and giving flowers, and I figured it would be a nice (cheap) way to decorate initially. I haven't bought flowers yet. But it suddenly hit me at lunch yesterday that I can actually get house plants if I want! I haven't had plants ever, as the first apartment I had on my own was also soon occupied by two cats who love to chew/play with/destroy vegetation. I've been without for thirteen years. But my cats are no longer with me, and there's nothing in the lease barring me from keeping house plants, so I may take a walk to the local garden shop one of these weekends. Anyone care to recommend something for cool, wet, sunless climates?

Domesticity
I moved my desk and computer junk out of the living area and up to my bedroom on Saturday morning, which necessitated a re-arrangement of the bedroom furniture. Purchase of a vacuum (and use thereof) was also required, and the usual laundry and ironing completed the domestic vision that was my weekend. It absolutely poured with rain yesterday. I may go in to London on the bus next weekend for the day, if I can find something interesting.... Otherwise, the dark days are just running together.

Ham & Succotash
I don't think I've had pizza since May last year. I've got a craving for Pizza Hut.

Of course this is business related
I've been wanting to get a larger TV ever since I noticed myself squinting at the on-screen TV guide from across the room; I had always intended the inexpensive 14" TV/VCR I bought in September at Tesco's with my mom to be a temporary solution, but it wasn't going to cut it for watching the slew of DVDs I was given over the Christmas holidays. I've been pricing new TVs and have been disgusted as they are just so damn expensive over here. One that sells for about $200 in the States is about 250 over here, and at the current exchange rate (1=$1.82), that's just too much to pay. So I've been perusing the online classifieds for used TVs, seeing whether Amazon.co.uk had any deals, and checked out the local charity and pawn shops. Imagine my surprise (and glee) when, while surfing the web at work this morning, I saw that someone had posted the following on dailyinfo.co.uk, Oxford's local website:
21" Ferguson TV --Free (phone number)
You can't beat free. I called immediately and at 9 this evening took a cab over and picked it up! It's in great condition (I need to get new batteries for the remote) so I am set! Now I just need a DVD player to play the DVDs. And a TV stand.

Readin
My last post was a mistake, though I am looking for something to read, and probably in non-fiction, Social Commentary or Philosophy, as I'm just getting to the end of a double Sci-Fi trilogy and am Sci-Fi'd out. Something like this, or this, or this, say. I can't recall if I pointed out this website before, which lets you choose the type of book, setting, characters, etc. It will even let you know if it's available to borrow from a local library (in the UK). Speaking of that last book, may I just say that I had believed that the 2000 election had shown just how flawed the american Electoral College system of presidential elections is (as the winner of the popular vote did not become president), but if the populace is going to elect a buffoon like Schwarzenegger to be Governor of California, perhaps we need an intelligent buffer zone.

Happy B-day!
My blog is two years old today. Beth B. sort of pre-empted my announcement of that fact a couple of days ago, but I'm pleased to see how the site has progressed and developed, despite of a short break or two, over the last 100+ weeks. The front page has been viewed just under 9,000 times over that period and I would guess about 2/3rds of those were from web surfers stumbling onto it after a Google or MSN search. I've probably said before that I don't make New Years resolutions, but I have a couple of projects I've had on hold while settling into life and the job in Oxford, hosting out of town guests, and traveling. Stay tuned!

I'm green
I know she's nearly three times my age, but I'm jealous that my Gran received three times as many Christmas cards as I did. I don't think she sent out more than two or three herself.

2004. Yay.
It was a good thing I planned a few days off after returning to the UK, as I have been out of it for the last 72 hours. Monday was a whirlwind of sorting and packing and shipping (five boxes from the USPS -- thanks everyone for the xmas goodies) and waiting at the airport. The flight over was the roughest I can ever recall, with severe turbulence for the first 3 hours that kept us strapped in our seats. It didn't help that I had the worst case of gas in living memory, and not one but two screaming two year-olds across the aisle. Needless to say, no sleep was had. I zipped through immigration on my Irish passport & collected my bags and twenty minutes later was on the bus to Oxford. Unlike the high-50s and sunshine of DC, England is enjoying typical mid-30s grey and drizzle. The house was still standing so I turned on the heat & made a cup of tea. I got some groceries a little later in the day, sorted some post, and was in bed around 6. I slept for over sixteen hours which was needed but it's strange to get rolling at two in the afternoon. I straightened out the banking mess and made dinner and putzed around until after midnight. I've got to work in the a.m. but it should be an easy day. I slept late again but went out to Banbury to see Gran today because I knew I'd be spending the weekend unpacking, sorting and doing laundry. She seemed pleased (surprised) to see me, and I managed to escape after only four cups of tea and a jam tart and two slices of bread & honey. And my BROTHER called!
