Dan and Ainsley have kindly invited me and my mom & her husband out to Colorado Springs next month to see a baseball game & play twister. I had been leery about asking for a day off, particularly knowing how busy we are & how Kate won't be back from maternity leave for another month, but last week's events at work kicked me in the rear & so I now have Monday 8/11 off. It'll be a short two day trip but I may go back again over either Thanksgiving or the holidays.

During June, most of my colleagues had performance reviews. I didn't have one as (I assume) I work for so many people that I fell through the cracks. It doesn't matter, as it soon became apparent that the reviews and the raises were not connected. Most people were not at all pleased with their "raise," especially as (poor timing) corporate announced the week before that health care costs are rising effective Aug 1. As a result, many, if not most, are actually taking home less in their packet than they were a year ago when we won the new contract and switched companies.

My health care costs are going up 80%. Guess I should go see the doctor and get my money's worth.

I watched most of The Golden Bowl this afternoon, another Merchant-Ivory production in the same vein as A Room With a View and Remains of the Day. This one starred Uma Thurman, Kate Beckinsale (from Pearl Harbor), Nick Nolte, Angelica Huston and mmm Jeremy Northam. Very well done, though a bit predictable--with some gorgeous stately homes as a backdrop. I may even go out and get the Henry James novel it's based on.

You know, it's sometime easier to do something yourself than have someone else do it. I hadn't realized until this past year that I am such a control freak in that way, especially at work. There is a consultant coming in tomorrow to take some of the weight off my shoulders for the mac refresh project, so that I can concentrate on my other two jobs. Unfortunately, in order for him to know what to do, I had to go in to work yesterday for six hours to draft a 20-page process manual for him. I'm glad that it's done, and it's a fairly good document if I do say so myself (my mom could deploy these Macs now, if she wanted). Half the weekend was shot, though.

I slept in late today and then spent most of the rest of it indoors, as we are having another sweltering heat wave -- 110 heat index today, more of the same tomorrow and Tuesday.

I did figure out how to digitize my old audio cassette tape collection, though, and have started on that project with a view to throwing even MORE stuff away before the move. Also tossed about ten years of old invoices, receipts, etc. that I must have moved five time & must have thought useful at some point.

The Mac Refresh project has started, and as expected it means very little free time at work; I'm balancing duties as the Project Manger, the lead technical engineer, and a customer relations rep. All that, plus wearing my Remedy and web server hats as time permits. Pardon me if I'm a bit grumpy during the next month or so.

Just back from a mini-break to NYC and Philly. Work allowed me to take Thursday and Friday without using vacation to attend the MacWorld Expo. I wasn't too impressed this year, as there were few major announcement from Apple about new initiatives. I didn't spend as much time as I thought I might at the Javitz Center, and truth be told, I was a bit bothered by the crowds and the heat.

New York is just friggin hot. Sweat, sweat, sweat, and the crowds, construction and concrete don't help much.

But I got to stay with Todd S and his wife Laura W, and had a nice dinner with them & saw Insomnia for half a Jackson. Saturday Todd kindly drove me down to Philly on his way to the Jersey shore, and I caught up with Art & Tony. We went out to a couple clubs that night, and slept in late the next day before I had to take the train back into DC. The cats were conflicted between being pissed I'd been gone so long and happy that I was finally back.

No word yet, I'll give it a week.

Happy Bastille Day!

For whatever reason, July 14 always reminds me of two things: my ex-college roommate Todd S., with whom I suffered through several miserable semesters of French, and the French restaurant on Capitol Hill (I'll have to ask Ainsley to remind me of the name) that always had a special menu & activities on this date.

Perhaps today's would-be-assassin of the French president also had one-too-many irregular verbs to conjugate?

Well, finally some good news (No, not that---though I should be hearing from EIRE by the end of the month).

My manager gave me permission to go to NYC next week for two days, for the MacWorld Expo, without having to use annual leave. Having two days means I won't have a miserably long day, with a three hour train ride up, lots of walking in steamy NYC and the crowded convention center, and a late three hour train ride back. It does mean I'll have a lot of work to do between now and then, but it will be a nice break & I'll get to see Todd & Laura. I may be able to stop in Philly on the way back to see Art & Tony as well. A surprise mini-holiday, then.

It's still hot as hell, and we still don't have AC at work. I'm going to buy a kiddie pool and fill it with ice cubes tomorrow.

Hmmm....

Archives seem to be working again.

But I had four hours of sleep last night and took a nice hot bath when I got home, so I'm heading for bed. More to come.

Well it would figure that the weekend I decide to return to posting Blogger would go belly up. They still don't have all the kinks worked out; specifically, Archives and the Archive template aren't working right. I'll try again later today or tomorrow to tidy things up.

In the meantime, I can tell you that you didn't miss very much during the last eight or nine days; work, heat, no AC, more work, a couple trips to the Post Office, and that's about it.

In case it matters, I started this six months ago today, and have had about 950 views of this page -- about 800 of those were by me, making sure things look right. Thank you, visitor #951, who searched Google for "Rum Raisin + City Slickers" and happened across my page. Welcome.
